Wiscasset Girls Win!
The Wolverines snap a 122 game losing streak
It's hard to grasp just how long the Wiscasset girls' losing streak was. They had lost 122 consecutive games (according to data tracked by the Lincoln County News), with their previous win coming on December 22nd, 2016 over a Hall-Dale team coached by Jarod Richmond.
2016.
Barack Obama was President. That was the year David Bowie died. Moonlight won Best Picture. Chance the Rapper won 3 Grammy Awards. It was a wild time to be alive.
2,941 days. Just imagine your team going that long without winning.
But on Islesboro yesterday, all that came to an end. Xoe Morse hit two clutch free throws in the final minute to break a 21-21 tie and Michelle Farrin added another with 4 seconds left to seal the 24-21 win.
After the game, I reached out to coach Dan Wall to ask what the win meant:
These girls have worked hard all season. Worked on Every aspect of the game. From ball handling to a half court press. They have never given up. All these girls want to do is play hard and be recognized. This win has done that for them. 100 plus games in the loss column takes a toll on you. Breaking that streak for these girls is going to help them being more confident that when we work hard it pays off. Tonight we celebrate, tomorrow we work even harder.
After all those losses, they must be on Cloud 9.
In case you haven't heard, Thursday night's Portland/Deering game at the Expo had some issues.
You can see some of the first fight on the Portland Hudl page. It's about an hour and 6 minutes in and comes during a free throw attempt.
They pulled the teams off the floor and resumed play twenty minutes later. Then a second fight broke out with under 2 minutes to play and they called the game. The Hudl feed cuts off with over 3 minutes to go, what with the long delay throwing things off.
You don't need me to tell you this sort of thing can't keep happening. That's 3 fights in the stands this year, which is 3 too many.
In related news, Sumner canceled a middle school game because "the level of sportsmanship displayed by some spectators from both sides during recent games has fallen short of the standards we all strive to uphold."
As usual, the kids suffer the consequences of the actions of the adults.
I get into this a little bit in the open of the latest episode of the podcast.
Then, Adam Robinson joins me to talk about his first month ever as a high school basketball coach. If you're unaware, Adam traded in his media pass for the lucrative world of coaching Class D Junior Varsity basketball.
We get into that and, as always with Adam, it diverges in fun directions.
As always, you can listen to this wherever you consume podcasts.
Remember all the way back on Monday when Mattanawcook went off for 113 points against Lee Academy?
They're at it again!
Thanks to Danielle Neal for sending in the video.
Avery Jordan led the way with 30 in 3 quarters. Kooper McCarthy added 23 points, 10 assists, 6 steals, and 5 rebounds. The win moves them to 10-0 on the season. They're +326 on the season and averaging 76.1 ppg. They've got Dexter next, so 3 in a row seems unlikely, but you never know.
It looks like the real Game of the Day was in Blue Hill.
GSA's Colby Eaton blocked the potential game-winning Woodland 3 with one second left to preserve the win.
Elsewhere:
Zander Steele's 20 wasn't enough for Richmond against Carrabec...Griffin Gammon scored 18 in Gorham's win over Massabesic...Carter Norton hit 6 3's and had 18 points to fuel Mount Blue to a lopsided win over Mountain Valley...Evan Bilodeau's 17 and a big 3rd quarter led Winthrop to a win over Waynflete...Buckfield's Kianna Finnegan (12) and Sarae Devoe (14) each outscored Telstar...Kylie Lamson's 26 points and 6 steals against TA ensured Cheverus wouldn't lose their 4th straight...Ava Ezell's 24 led Hodgdon over Washburn...Eigth Graders Addison Labelle and Sadie Trams had 18 and 17, respectively, as Ashland made short work of Van Buren...Cyran Ciarleglio had 20 in Hodgdon's win over Washburn.
Today is kind of loaded.
A theme this year in the midcoast is of teams that should have fallen into oblivion with talent losses, be it graduation or transfer to Montverde, that have managed to stay afloat.
One of those is the Lincoln Academy boys, who graduated essentially their entire starting 5 and are still 7-3, this coming only a couple years after a stretch of 1-17ish seasons.
They travel to Jay for a battle with Spruce Mountain.
I've seen both of these teams a couple of times and they're kind of similar. Both excel with quick, aggressive, smaller lineups that can harass the hell out of you on defense. Lincoln doesn't have a scorer that can duel with Jace Bessey, but Spruce doesn't two guards who are as in sync as the Hunt twins. This might come down to secondary matchups. Can Lincoln's Terry Welle match Spruce's Cai Dougher, for example?
The Model's picks for the rest of today's games are after the jump.
