Week 6

They say football is a game of inches and usually, that's just something color analysts say to fill time. But sometimes, it really is.

We go to Rockland, where Medomak Valley, down 20-14, needs to convert a crucial 4th and short against Oceanside.

So close!

After the stop, Oceanside would score on the next possession to put the game away.

Zeb Foster had another huge game for the Mariners.

A little north, Camden rallied down 24-0 to stay unbeaten.

Down south, Noble gave Thornton Academy everything they could handle.

With the win, TA moved to #1 in the rankings (until Fryeburg's win last night).

But the score that really jumped out was Kennebunk dismantling Deering.

Michael Hoffer has an excellent-as-usual writeup.

Deering handed first setback at Kennebunk
Rams have no answers on either side of the ball in a 41-0 loss.

On the podcast, Fox Bangor's Tyler Krusz joined me to overreact to Week 5 and since we share a love of the Hurley brothers (Tyler has a great story about Danny Hurley triggering a 911 call), I wore my old Sacramento Kings Bobby Hurley jersey.

Obviously, we got into basketball a little bit, including some teams that we think will have a good year and we sort of cobble together a short list for Mr./Miss Basketball.

I'm very tired in this and living on a very gross energy drink, so if you want to hear me be terrible and make some dumb mistakes, this is the show for you. On the other hand, Tyler brought it, so...yeah.

As always, you can listen to this on Spotify.

And subscribe!

In the open, I run down the new top 10 and if you go to the rankings now, you'll notice some small changes due to last night's games.

Football Rankings
The Model takes on the gridiron.

You've probably heard the Lisbon football story. They forfeited last week and are forfeiting this week because of a hazing situation. The police have been called, which is never a good sign.

And now, 7 players have been removed from the team.

Lisbon High removes 7 players from football team in wake of hazing investigation
The announcement comes one day after the school forfeited a second football game in the wake of hazing allegations.

So, I don't want to speculate, but there's stuff floating around that looks really bad, like something you'd see in a Porky's rip-off from the 80's that we would all agree has aged terribly.

Assuming it's true, to see something like that in 2024 is staggering. Regardless, it's pretty clear that what happened is very bad.

It's hard to imagine they'll play another game this year, which means I have to rethink how the Model handles forfeits.

There's a cool milestone in hockey.

Jessica Campbell makes history and becomes first ever female assistant coach in the NHL | CNN
Jessica Campbell made history on the opening night of the National Hockey League (NHL) season by becoming the first ever female assistant coach in the league.

This...doesn't seem great.

How many times have you seen a coach quit mid-season? You could probably count it on one hand.

MMA football coaches resign midseason - Penobscot Bay Press
CASTINE—The two top football coaches at Maine Maritime Academy’s rekindled football program have resigned halfway through the season and just days away from a home game in Castine. Head coach Calvin Powell and assistant coach Dan McKenna have resigned, leaving the football program that had been dormant since 2020. It was rebooted in 2023, with the help of more than […]

This week's football schedule doesn't look great. Last week we had 10 games with a Stax Index over 80, which is generally what you need for "Game of the Day" status. This week we have 5 and I don't love any of them, which means we're about to get an instant classic out of left field.

Anyway, the Model's picks for this weekend are after the jump.
