Spring Sports*

Today is Opening Day for Spring Sports, assuming it doesn't rain or snow where you are and the field isn't too muddy to play on. As wet as it's been the last week or so, I can't say I have a ton of faith in the last one.

I've got the schedules all loaded, at least as much as they were uploaded in the MPA's site last night. They were...a mess and there's clearly a lot of games missing, so this is very much a work-in-progress.

The Heal Points will be coming in the next couple of days, along with rankings. I'd hoped to have that all running today, but converting the schedules into something usable took 4x as long as it normally does.

For basketball, Heal Points are a paid feature and Rankings are free, but for spring and fall sports, Rankings are also a paid feature (sorry). So if that's something you enjoy, upgrade!

The more paid subscribers, the more I can do. Simple math.

The baseball, softball, and lacrosse schedules for the next couple of days are as accurate as I have it on the Scoreboard.

Just like in basketball season, you can enter a score (Google Sheets doesn't allow that in mobile) and anything notable in the notable column. The streaming/GO links are working off the basketball database, which won't be the same for all schools.

The season hasn't even started and we've already got drama in Searsport, who tried to fire their baseball coach John Frye who [checks notes] has won 5 state titles and is their all-time winningest coach [/notes] and apparently yelled at a soccer game.

Mark Haskell has the whole story for the Midcoast Villager.

The whole story has some strong Parks & Rec vibes to it, but this takes it to a new level:

You could go an entire career and not get a golden opportunity to quote Wrath of Khan.

With Michael Hoffer making the move to the newsletter world, it was a natural move to have him on the podcast to promote the new venture.

And, of course, we talked basketball a bit and did a little bit of a spring sports preview. As always, it was a fantastic time talking to Hoffer.

You can check out the full conversation on YouTube (subscribe!) and you can listen on Spotify, Apple or wherever you consume podcasts.

If you enjoy these conversations (and I know I do), sharing with people, subscribing on your platform of choice, and leaving a positive review goes a long, long way.

And if you don't enjoy them, keep that to yourself.

This is why you hustle on the bases, kids.

Finally, there's a couple more coaching openings.

The Old Town boys are looking for a new varsity coach after letting Garrett Libby go.

Garrett Libby will not be returning as the boys basketball coach after leading the Coyotes since the fall of 2019.

As are the Fort Fairfield girls.

But in good news, Jahleel Joseph is hitting the Puma Circuit this summer.
