Mount Abram locks up the 1 seed in C South
It was cold outside all over the state last night and Jay was no exception, with temperatures in the single digits last night, but inside the Spruce Mountain gym, Mount Abram's Bryce Wilcox was hot. He drained 8 shots from deep en route to 34 points, out-dueling Jace Bessey who had 4 triples of his own and the Roadrunners pulled off a mild upset, 63-57. They were 4.5 point underdogs, basically a 60/40 proposition.
Prior to the game, Mount Abram was 99.3% to get the 1 seed in C South. I don't think we need to re-run it. This thing is a wrap.
Let's go to Sumner, where they've got a 51-45 lead over Calais with 2:45 left.
You want to jump to around 1:10:00 in the timecode.
Sumner makes a layup to push it to 53-45, then Calais hits a 3, gets a steal in the backcourt and converts that into another 3, gets another steal and a foul and suddenly we're at 53-52.
With 50 seconds left, Calais grabs another steal on a trap at mid-court, but there's a foul on the layup. The first free throw is good, then on the second one, there's a, um, suspect call on the rebounding action that gives Sumner the ball on a play that sure looked like a Sumner foul.
Sumner then gets a wide-open layup and misses it (because the ball, it does not lie). Calais races down the floor for a layup (and foul) and now Calais has the lead, 56-54 with 27.8 to go.
Playing for a final shot, a Sumner player gets leveled behind the 3-point line with 3.8 seconds left (was he shooting? Maybe?), makes both free throws and cue the clip (it's on NHFS, but it's a free clip)
That's Kaeson Dana with the game winner from the logo.
For a team clinging to a play-in spot in C North, this has to hurt.
Here's a game you don't usually see on the schedule.
Class A Morse, relegated to Class B, hosted Class C Wiscasset, themselves relegated down to Class D. That's got to be a first. You'll occasionally have a 2 class cross-over--Noble played Traip a couple of times before they turned things around and even lost one year when Traip finished 9-9.
The Model had Wiscasset as a very slight favorite in this one and that was looking pretty good when they led 24-20 at the half, but Morse was able to right the ship in the second half, pulling away for a win.
You wanna see a coach get ejected up 77 with 46 seconds left?
Yeah, you do.
I just...I dunno. You're up 77. What could possibly be so important?

In yesterday's run of the Tourney Odds, Mattanawcook had the inside track on one of the byes in C North and a shot at the 1 seed. They'll have to beat Penobscot Valley to do that.
Dexter has a chance at a bye, but just like the Lynx, they'll have to beat Mattanawcook to get it.
But beyond that, it's our classic battle of unstoppable offense against impenetrable defense.
The Model's picks for the rest of today's games are after the jump.
