Medomak and Oceanside Split

It's a rivalry game in front of a packed crowd

Medomak and Oceanside Split

For a bitter rivalry, Medomak/Oceanside has been pretty one-sided lately. The Oceanside boys had won the last 7 games in the series and the Oceanside girls had won the last 13. But with the Galley twins graduating to do a prep year at Kent's Hill (where they're doing their thing, scoring 100+ on teams with help from GNG's Nate Hebert) and Bailey Breen taking her talents to just outside Orlando, there was speculation that the tide might be turning.

As always, it was a big crowd for this one--not as big as last year's late-season game where they were turning people away--but still a great atmosphere.

And then the Oceanside girls came out and hit their first 3 shots from deep and before anyone knew what was happening, it was 9-0 and Medomak coach Lindsay Vinal was burning a timeout. Claudia Feeley found Kytana Williamson to get the Panthers on the board and they started to slowly chip away at the lead as Oceanside missed their next 7 3's and Medomak got it to three before Renee Ripley connected at the end of the half to get the lead to 6.

Medomak got it to 2 in the second half before Oceanside, who is considerably smaller than Medomak, went into a weave that gave the Panthers fits. They couldn't find a fix and Oceanside pulled away for a 66-48 win--their 14th straight in the series.

Aubrianna Hoose led the way with 21. Renee Ripley had a huge second half and ended with 18 points and 13 rebounds.

In some ways, the boys' game was a reverse of the girls' game. Medomak's Owen Dostie hit a three on the first possession and Medomak was up 7-1 before Oceanside righted themselves. The first 10 minutes or so were low-scoring, with Medomak's defense clamping down on Oceanside--they would hold the Mariners to 14% from the floor in the first half–led by Gabe Lash, who drew the assignment of Zeb Foster and forced him into very difficult shots. He had 2 points at the half. But by then, it was mostly over. Medomak used a 17-1 run in the second half to put the game more or less out of reach, led by transfer Rocco Depatsy and Kristian Schumann, who had 7 and 9, respectively, in the 2nd quarter. Oceanside made a small run in the third quarter, which was shut down when Mason Nguyen got going and when DePatsy splashed home a 3 from the corner and Lash threw down a breakaway dunk, it was all over but the JV minutes. Depatsy finished with 18 & 7. Schumann with 18 & 5. Nguyen added 13 & 11.

I talked to Rocco DePatsy after the game.

There's no win greater than a win that breaks a losing streak.

Just ask Traip.

If you were going to look at yesterday's schedule and just circle a game, you'd probably circle Noble/Falmouth.

Well, it delivered.

The host Knights, regional finalists a year ago, won 54-52 when their ace senior guard, Jamier Rose, made a driving layup with 4.2 seconds left. Noble is now 2-0, with wins against two perennial southern Maine powers after opening the season with a 67-59 victory at Class AA South Portland on Friday.
Boys’ basketball: Noble and Falmouth both gain from early season encounter
The Knights pull out a 54-52 win on Jamier Rose’s layup in a game between teams hoping to contend in Class A South.

Rose had 24 and this is really turning into one of the great turnarounds.

You could easily see this being a regional final and if so, I'm in.

The Belfast boys and girls both beat Morse last night and I'm not sure when they last won on the same day.

Oh my god.

It's been an eventful early season for Monmouth and Spruce. Monmouth, in their title defense, picked up 6 technicals in a loss to Maranacook and then beat Winthrop.

Spruce is 2-0 with convincing wins over Boothbay and Hall-Dale (a game that saw senior Jace Bessey pick up his 1,000th point). They'll try to get a big heal point win before Friday's trip to Medomak Valley.

Monmouth will be looking to add their own huge Heal Point win and, you know, keep the techs to a minimum.

The Model's picks for today's games are after the jump.
