Mary Allen Joins the 1K Club
Last night was a light schedule, but that doesn't mean we have nothing to talk about.
Let's go to Blue Hill, where Central is handling GSA, but in full countdown mode.
Enter Mary Allen in transition.
As you might have guessed, that's her 1,000th point! Congrats!
We had a couple of blowouts that you won't read about on Facebook.
The Penobscot Valley girls gave Penquis 99 problems and avoided 2 days of dumb Facebook outrage by staying under 100.
The Washburn boys beat Ashland 69-9, which is also apparently better than scoring 100 points.
And the Valley boys beat Forest Hills 94-59. I can't remember the last time Forest Hills gave up 90 points.
But, they were all under 100, so no one cares.
SOUND ON
That's one of Maranacook's Mitchell Maceda's 10 blocked shots last night against Winthrop. He also had 12 rebounds and scored 8 points.
Elsewhere:
Chan Ring led Winthrop with 18 in the loss to Marancook...Kirsten Bigelow and Madeline Hill each had 18 as Valley blew out Forest Hills...Maren Maxon had 18 in Wells' win over Lake Region...Levi Shorts had 18 (I sense a theme) as Valley put up 94 on Forest Hills. The Tigers were led by Jaxson Desjardins, who put up 21 and apparently didn't get the memo about sticking at 18...Cai Dougher had 19 in Spruce's win over Lisbon. The Phoenix led 52-6 at halftime...Sophomore Jacob Harmon had 21 and Levi Laverdiere added 20 as Monmouth handled Boothbay...Jacob Linkletter's 16 helped Madison take care of Oak Hill.
Up in the County, Caribou had a jersey night in honor of former Presque Isle and Caribou player Iffy Sargent, who passed away unexpectedly earlier this week.
I never met Iffy (who was won a Gold Ball for Caribou), but reading about him today, it has become clear that he was a beloved member of several communities who left us far too soon. He seemed to be popular in Caribou and Presque Isle at the same time, which I thought was illegal. But some people just transcend laws.
He was also connected to the Central Aroostook community, so they're having a jersey night in his honor for their game against Fort Fairfield. If you're in the area, it's worth the trip.
UMaine's AJ Lopez went a little bit viral yesterday.
If you were online at all yesterday, you no doubt heard about the death of legendary baseball broadcaster Bob Eucker.
I remember watching games when I was a kid when he was the color guy alongside Bob Costas and thinking it was the funniest thing I'd ever heard. He was just so irreverent during something as serious as the World Series! Biggest, most important games of the year and he's up there cracking jokes about his batting average.
Writing this now, I'm thinking that might have been kind of a formative thing.
Anyway, you're probably seeing the Miller Lite commercials and the clips from Major League and maybe Mr. Belvedere and they're all great (well, maybe not all the Mr. Belvedere episodes), but you should add this skit from the time he hosted SNL.
RIP.
This is a good one!
Let's go the A North Boys Tourney Odds, where we pretty much know our tourney field.
A North was a lot more fun with 12 teams.
Messo has a pretty good handle on the 1 seed, then after that it gets interesting.
Brewer is one of the better stories of the season, starting 10-0 after going 4-14 last year. A big part of that is freshman Oli Higgins, but this was also a team that lost a TON of talent from a championship team and lost a lot of close games in that 4-14 season, so just a natural shift in the luck of close games was a sign they would bounce back. The Witches have a realistic shot at the 2 seed and are very likely in the 2-4 range.
If the 1 seed isn't an option, then there's a real difference between the 2 and the 3 in your quarterfinal matchup.
This is not a knock on a solid Gardiner team that has a quality win over Greely, but 2 through 6 could be a real dogfight.
As for Camden, they're likely in the 4/5 game, but a win here would go a long way toward getting them into the 3 seed.
But beyond all that, Camden has the #1 offense in Class A. Brewer has the #1 defense in Class A.
MaineCoast.TV will be streaming this.
The Model's picks for the rest of today games are after the jump.
