by Maine Basketball Rankings

The Southern Maine teams have started playing, and with it starts the scramble to try and find their schedules, with range from very, very easy to find to highly-classified secrets. It really shouldn’t take 10-15 click on your website to find the schedule, especially since I promise you there are people in your community who are not as internet-savvy as I am.

Anyway, I’ve added Heal Point standings broken down by the various COVID Cups (or Don Shields Invitational) around the state. So if you’re wondering about your seeding, start there. I also want to add that since the MPA has pretty much abandoned this season, it would be the perfect time to use the Power Rankings as your seeding method. It’s like the Heal Points, only more accurate.

There are 5 games today that could make a pretty strong case for Game of the Day. Up North, the Southern Aroostook girls visit Presque Isle in a game that’s been circled on a lot of calendars all winter (Stax of 83.0) and the Central Aroostook boys host Fort Kent (82.1) and Caribou visits Houlton (82.4).

But we head to Central Maine, where the Maranacook/Cony doubleheader features the Boys and Girls Game of the Day.

The Cony girls have played in 6(!) games decided by 2 points or fewer. They are 1-5 in those games, so while they’re 10 in the A North Heal Points, the Power Rankings have them 5th. The Maranacook girls are 8-1 against a mostly Class A schedule. They’ve only got 1 close game, a 33-32 win at Cony. Fittingly, the Model has this as a 2 point game.

#9 Cony @ #10 Maranacook (Maranacook +2.0) [87.7]

On the boys side, Maranacook finally lost their Perfect Resume last night in a 76-71 win at Leavitt. Cash McClure led the way with 32/10/6. Maranacook is the highest-scoring team in the state, averaging 84 PPG. They also have the highest +/- at +332. If you remember, they put up 98 in the last game against Cony. The Rams are 6-3, but against a tougher schedule. They give up 58 a game, but Cony traditionally plays at such a fast pace that their scoring defense is often inflated. They’ll need every bit of it to slow down the Mr. Basketball front-runner.

#3 Maranacook @ #8 Cony (Maranacook +4.2) [89.4]
