Everyone Gets a Buzzer-Beater
2024 is going out strong
There was something in the air yesterday.
Let's start with the Scarborough girls, who were a 23.4 point underdog on the road against Cheverus. This was a close one the entire way, but Cheverus had to feel pretty good when they were up 36-31 after 3 quarters and 44-37 with 2 minutes to play.
But Scarborough rallied and Cheverus was clinging to a 44-43 lead with 12 seconds to go.
To the tape!
That's Megan Rumelhart with the dagger. Scarborough closed on a 10-0 run to pull off the upset of the year thus far.
That's not to say that 23.4 points is the biggest by-the-numbers upset of the year. Stearns was favored by 28-something early in the year against a Penquis team that didn't play last year and, therefore, there wasn't anything to go on. This is a legitimate Upset with a capital U.
But we're not done.
Let's go to Nokomis, where the Hampden girls trail the Warriors by 1 with 2.1 seconds to play.
That's freshman Mallory Lausier with the game-winner.
That must be it.
Nope.
Let's go to Narraguagus, where George Stevens Academy has the ball in a tied game.
That's the cue for sophomore Colby Eaton.
Eaton finished with 22.
How about another one?
The Madison boys came back down 15 in the fourth quarter to beat Dirigo at the buzzer with a layup by Nathan Cornforth. And, yep, there's video!
Oh, and we had another dunk technical. But this one was a little less controversial.
They'll call that in the NCAA. They'll call it in the NBA. But it's totally worth it. This is not your father's Class D.
Bangor Christian won 70-30.
And then there's this incredible play by Edward Little's Diing Maiwen, who has 18 on the night.
Finally, here's Nolan Ames NOT getting a dunk technical.
You know what? One more.
And Noble got their second 1,000 point scorer on the year. Congratulations to Bryce Guitard!
Like I said, busy day.

And that takes us to the last newsletter of 2024.
Thanks to everyone who read this little thing all year. It truly means a lot.
Currently, 970 people get this newsletter emailed to them 6 days a week during the season and I'd love to start 2025 on the other side of that imaginary 1K line.
So if you know someone who'd enjoy getting this free newsletter every day, pass it along.
When Monmouth was last featured in the newsletter, they were picking up 6 technicals on Opening Night. Since then, they've gone 4-1, with wins over Winthrop and Oak Hill and a loss to Waynflete.
They'll get one of the toughest tests in their schedule in Spruce Mountain, who are 6-0 and, honestly, probably ranked too low.
Spruce has dominated their schedule so far. They've got the 3rd highest scoring differential in the state and they're 1st in %Perfect, which means they're the most dominant team in the state, relative to their schedule. Except, the schedule is not great so far. It's the easiest in B South.
The Phoenix have this one, against a Monmouth team that might be ranked too high on the strength of last year's Gold Ball and then #3 Medomak Valley on Thursday. The combination will give us a really good idea of just how good they are.
I think the Model is underestimating them here.
The rest of the Model's picks for today's games are after the jump.
