Ellsworth Makes a Statement
The Eagles pull off an upset at home
The Ellsworth girls started the season down their best player when Grace Jaffray took her talents to college a year early. Since then, they've lost 3 more starters to injury, so it shouldn't have been a shocker to see them lose to Caribou.
Madelynn Deprey, who should be a Miss Basketball finalist, had 15 points and 11 rebounds.
So it's an upset, but an understandable one.
In the boys game, which was the Game of the Day, Ellsworth held Tristan Robbins to 4 points in the second half as they put the game away in a contest that wasn't particularly close.
There's been a lot of talk about how Caribou was the team to beat in B North and...maybe not?
Elsewhere...
Bri Mills had 16 & 10 as Valley made short work of Telstar...Zaden Steele filled up with stat sheet with 12 points, 7 steals, and 4 assists for Richmond...Old Town's Emmitt Byther had 26 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, four blocks, and three steals in a win over Foxcroft...Leo McNabb went for 23 as Cheverus took care of Bangor...Adam Fitzgerald hit 5 3's and scored 26 in Scarborough's win over Gorham...Fisher Tewksbury scored 20 points and grabbed 19 boards, Harry Louis chipped in 17, and Valley gave Telstar their first loss...Gorham finished on a 17-5 run to beat Scarborough....Mary Allen logged 39 points and 12 steals in 16 minutes for Central.
Bangor Christian's Elliot Straubel went OFF THE BACKBOARD to Rajon Reed for the dunk.
This is not your father's Class D.
And Calais' Frank Miliano threw down this sweet dunk.
Remember when these would have resulted in technicals?
Quite often, I get complaints about the rankings. "My team is too low! Our rivals are too high!"
Have you checked out the MaxPreps rankings?
These are the actual boys MaxPreps rankings. Seriously.
I go to games and I hear people say "MaxPreps says this and MaxPreps says that" and I can assure you that MaxPreps is a bunch of AI sludge that wouldn't be able to spell half of the schools in C North if you put a gun to their head.
They are a joke.
Also Marshwood is not 4-1. They're 3-2.
In comparison:
Sure, Windham is too low, but that's just because they haven't gotten into their schedule yet and they've only played 3 games. They'll move up and quickly.
Adam's teams dropped another game.
Kennebunk's Max Murray, who was the Maine Basketball Rankings Player of the Year way back when, just went in the first round of the MLS SuperDraft.
I think this is the highest Stax Index we've gotten so far.
We've got an early battle in A South, which is looking to be a very strong region so far. GNG is 5th, Marshwood is 3rd, and Mt. Ararat is 2nd in the early stages of the rankings.
GNG is 4-1 on the year, with a loss to Mt. Ararat and Marshwood is 5-0, with a win over Mt. Ararat, so it's easy to see how they would be ranked higher and favored.
You can look at those stat profiles and see the slight edge for Marshwood. Can they pull it off on the court?
The rest of the Model's picks for today's games are after the jump.
