EIGHT Parents Ejected
Someone didn't get the message
This newsletter is coming in late because, oh boy.
Most people, after seeing someone get embarrassed online for acting like a fool in public, would think twice about their own actions and maybe be more mindful going forward, at least for a couple of days.
Not this dude.
This dude said "hold my beer".
The Integrity of the Game!
If you want a longer look, go to around 1:16:00 in the timecode.
I didn't watch the whole game, because what other context do you need? As the kids say, you can't do that.
The parent charges the floor and gets in the ref's face. I think it's worth pointing out the AD gets there very quickly, which probably means he had reason to believe something might happen in that part of the building.
Neither of these teams will make the play-in, so it's not like this game has larger stakes. It's just a regular season game of two teams playing out the string.
The refs then take the ball and leave the floor, exiting out the same door the ejected fan left through, and are gone for like 6 minutes. During this time, you can see the coaches talking, probably something like this:
As the offending parties file out, one of the Oak Hill players runs over to give them a hug.
I'm dying to know what happened in the hallway.
Eventually the refs and the AD return. The AD informs the crowd that if there are any more incidents the game will be completed with no fans, because this is where we are now.
You can see the difference in the crowd.
Before
And after
As you can see, the ejected fans were all sitting together. I'm not sure if all of those empty seats represent ejected fans. Some might just be people who left because the ejected fan was their ride.
This is obviously horrible and considering the incident earlier this week, it looks even worse. I will just say that this fall I was at a field hockey event involving Oak Hill and the parents on several occasions called the opposing players a derogatory term that will get you slapped at a bar. One of those players was my step daughter, so my empathy for their side of the story is pretty much zero. No, it's less than zero.
If you remember last year's ginned-up "controversy" about the MPA banning teams from the playoffs for sportsmanship reasons, this is the sort of thing the rule is there for. Let's go to a non-toxic Facebook comment.
Oak Hill has already banned themselves from the tournament, so that's taken care of, but I'd tread lightly if I was a program with parents who are a problem.
You already know who those people are in your program. Maybe have a talk with them?
It's not hard to imagine this getting worse and someone getting hurt. I don't know if this would work, but maybe we get a biker gang together that goes from gym to gym and scares the living crap out of these idiots? Just an idea. Feel free to use it.
In the end, you should keep watching that Hudl link, because Boothbay won it on a put-back at the buzzer!
Ball don't lie.
Tatum French had 19 for the Seahawks.
I went to the Medomak Valley @ Oceanside double-header, which was a cancer fundraiser.
I'm so tired.
The first half of the girls' game was...not great.
In the second half, Medomak extended their lead to 8, then Oceanside went on a 14-2 run to take the lead, then milked the clock for a large chunk of the second half and came away with a 3-point win in a game that they won't putting in the Hall of Fame. But if you had the over in "players hitting the floor" and jump ball calls, you had a nice payday.
Aubrianna Hoose had 11 for Oceanside. Kytana Williamson led Medomak with 14.
The boys game was better, but not all that compelling as Medomak was in control the whole time. Gabe Lash left in the second quarter with a bloody nose after taking an inadvertent blow from Zeb Foster on a play at the rim and Medomak led 27-16 at the half. Kristian Schumann hit 3 shots from deep in the third quarter as the Panthers extended their lead to 20. He finished with 18. Medomak won 69-45 to go to 17-0. Lash had 11 rebounds and 6 assists and the Panthers had 9 different players score. Zeb Foster had 23 for Oceanside.
Elsewhere.
Lily Oliver had a game high 29 points and 10 steals for Fort Kent...Nolan Ames did a little bit of everything with 23 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists, and 5 blocks, but it wasn't enough to overcome Parker Morin and Cony as the Rams won a thriller...Max Bouchard's 12 & 10 helped Bonny Eagle to a win over Lewiston...Leo McNabb's 21 led Cheverus against SoPo...Owen Galway had 17 and Diing Maiwen added 15 in Edward Little's win over Bangor...Brady Atwater's 17 led Gardiner to a win over Nokomis...Brody Morgan nearly outscored Islesboro by himself with his 18...Wyatt Benoit dropped 27 on Deering...Creighty Dickson had 20 & 16 as Windham snapped a 3 game losing streak...Avery Clark scored 21 as Bangor rallied to beat Edward Little...Alma Bewsher had 16 and Islesboro held Telstar to 16...Lewiston got 20 from Ella Beaudoin against Bonny Eagle...Celia Bergdahl had 21 & 12 as Maranacook blew out Monmouth...Isabelle Tice scored 19 and Sarah Theriault added 18 as Marshwood cruised...South Portland used a 26-point 3rd quarter to erase a 6-point deficit against Cheverus...Maddie Grimaldi's shooting helped Spruce pull away from Mountain Valley.
Former podcast guest Chad Pulkkinen is your McDonald's AA Coach of the year.
These are starting to trickle out, but I haven't seen a full list yet.
This couldn't be more up my alley.
Mike Mandell has a great story on how teams are embracing analytics to win games.
Fun fact: I got into doing all of this by doing analytics for my brother's team many years ago, way back before Hudl was even a thing. One thing I learned is you can't just go by numbers. You have to merge them with what's on tape. They have to work together in some way. And that's what makes something like Hudl so helpful.
Is this good?
Let's finish this up.
The Caribou girls have wrapped up the 1 seed in B North.
They'll host an Old Town team that's trying to grab the 2 seed.
The Model's picks for the rest of today's games are after the jump.
